Emmy Award Winning Anchorwoman Natalie Jacobson was the evening’s emcee.

Lori Abrams Berry welcomed the honorees, and spoke about the health center’s focus on integrated care as the best way to treat patients in a coordinated and holistic way.  She described the way teams of medical and behavioral health professionals work together, engaging the patient as a vital member of the team.  “The need to communicate in simple, everyday terms is important, especially with a patient population that is as diverse and multicultural as ours,” said Berry.   “Dr. Tim has spent his career working to make complex health issues accessible to the general public, and inspires us as we work to best communicate with our patients.  We are thrilled to honor him.”

Emcee Natalie Jacobson spoke about her visit to the health center with Dr. Johnson.  “I was amazed to learn that the health center cares for 40 percent of those who live in Lynn,” she said.  “Lynn is a diverse city and with that comes a lot of challenges; at or near the top of the list would be health.  Congratulations to everyone who is a part of the Lynn Community Health Center.  I truly applaud what you do.”

Dr. Johnson recalled that his first job in Massachusetts was as the director of Emergency Services at Lynn Union Hospital in 1971, the same year Lynn Community Health Center was founded. His journey took him from there to his first job as a medical reporter.  Throughout his career he never lost sight of the doctor-patient relationship that made him one of the most trusted TV personalities in the United States.

He said that there are three qualities that define good health care in any setting:  coordination, communication, and compassion.  “If you have these three qualities, you are going to deliver good healthcare,” he said. “I could see this happening before my eyes as I walked around Lynn Community Health Center.  I’ve been to many community health centers in my life and career, and this is a fine example of what one should really be like.”

Executive Editor Jennifer Berryman accepted the award on behalf of WCVB-TV.  “WCVB is proud to maintain a commitment to really important medical stories,” she said.  “Dr. Tim always set the right tone for the audience, and we hope that we compliment what you do on a day to day basis with your patients.”

More than 200 people attended the event. Lead sponsors were Cambridge Savings Bank, Eastern Bank Charitable Foundation, Eaton Apothecary, Elder Service Plan of the North Shore, Neighborhood Health Plan, and Partners Healthcare.
