catherine huntDr. Janey Thornton, USDA Deputy Under Secretary for Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, visited Lynn Community Health Center’s Baby Café on Tuesday as part of a multi-stop visit to the Boston Area to promote breastfeeding during National Breastfeeding Awareness Month.  Twelve moms were on hand to talk to her about their experiences.

“Breast milk provides many benefits for children, but breastfeeding can be difficult for some mothers,” she said during her visit.  “That is why we are so happy to see programs such as The Baby Café offering support to moms who are committed to breastfeeding their babies.”

Jointly staffed by members of the Women’s Health and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) Teams, Lynn Community Health Center’s Baby Café is a free drop-in center offering breastfeeding support and assistance from professionals and other moms—all in a relaxed atmosphere.  It is open to everyone every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. – noon.  All pregnant or breastfeeding women are welcome to drop in at any time during opening hours, and there is no requirement that participants be patients at Lynn Community Health Center.

In this relaxed, informal atmosphere participants can:

  • Chat with other moms and build your confidence.
  • Get one-to-one help from specially trained staff
  • Look at books, leaflets and DVDs
  • Enjoy free refreshments.

For more information visit The Baby Cafe website or contact Lynn Community Health Center’s Women’s Health Department at 781-593-2727 x 2200 or 781-596-6511.
